Best Rap Songs, Top Rap Songs and Me - A 20 Year Journey

What is rap? Rap – rhythm and poetry.

Given that definition, what's the best rap music, the top rapping online and everywhere? From the first rap song to the latest, there’s lots of anger rapping. Mean streets stuff. Gangsta. When one thinks of the hot top best rappers, the anger rappers tend to come to mind.

But ... rhythm and poetry. That’s a way bigger category. That’s something I’ve been drawn to, for close to 2 decades, since things I called word pieces started coming into my head. One term for them: spoken word poetry. But they were meant to be with music. Poetry with music, rhythm and poetry. Rap poems, rap songs.

What's the TOP rapping? There you'll come to anger stuff. Other stuff as well - Eminem, Mary J Blige. But so easy to get masses of images of anger in our heads, hear words about being done wrong and mother-you-know-what.

What's the BEST rapping? That depends on you, on what most appeals to you, on what rhythm and music most moves you.

Much of the top stuff is what I call long schlong rap. It comes from, and encourages, an audience drawn to that.

A typical piece goes something like:

My dick is big
My brain is small
I'm the meanest mother-you-know-what
of all

My rage is huge
My hate is great
I'm been done wrong
I'm the meanest long schlong mother-you-know-what
of all

Okay, the stuff about brain size is usually not mentioned.

Now, enough about that. Here, mainly my journey. Some anger, lots of other emotions.

In a way, not accepting that rap needs to stay as it is, is like not accepting that anything in the world needs to stay as it is.

Social change - much of it comes from not accepting that things have to be as they are. Racism, reverse racism, sexism, reverse sexism, and so on. I’ve never accepted that we have to accept stuff like that.

What is rap? It’s like, what are women like? Sometimes it’s time for beliefs to change.

Rap - I see that so much more is possible than in mainstream rap. A bigger wider rap world. And in fact, change keeps happening everywhere.

But for now, my stuff.

There’s no single atmosphere. It could be anything.

There’s the laid back feel of Real Cool Dude:
shuffling down the street
a real cool dude
saw myself a woman
didn’t want to be rude . . .

The longing in Are You My Match:
are you my match
so the fire may catch
from a spark
to a flash . . .

The urgency of Escape Velocity:
my nerves shriek
I need to reach
ESCAPE VELOCITY
my nerves strain
I must attain
ESCAPE . . .

The much more traditional frustration in You Think That You Know:
you think that you know
but you don’t know
you think that you have
but you’ve been had . . .

But even when there’s frustrations, there’s no sense of a world out to get me. Instead there’s the frustration of not being able to reach someone.

Most, though, the atmosphere could be anything in these pieces.

They capture moments, put them into words. Unlike most songs, the words are meant to be mainly spoken. Unlike most poems, they’re meant to be spoken rather than read. Often there’s repetition and rhythm.

Rap.

I’ll give the link to just one – a new rap song. My Name: Paul Revere, Freedom Rider. It’s an unusual one for me, something brand new – a political rap song.

What is rap? A better question may be: what happens when we enlarge the definition?

Some of the people who love rap may end up hating it - because it may not have the emotion or message they want. And some of those who hate it may find themselves opening to it.

There comes to be more and more to what we call rap.

Then the latest rap music may not be like the first rap song. Then the best rap songs, the top rap songs may be about walking in the forest, or lying in the grass – not bleeding from a gunshot wound, but looking up at the clouds on a warm summer day.

Best rappers – that would change too.

We shall see.
